Cinema This Week

MuHu~!

Reels and reels of cinematic production have invaded the silver screens locally recently, all arranged for premieres in quick succession. Last weekend we saw Black Sheep, Rise: Blood Hunter, Vacancy, Broken English, Invisible Target, Paprika and The Condemned rushing to compete against one another in the local cinemas' box-office chart. So what's the outcome? Invisible Target and Vacancy successfully squeezed into the box-office chart's top 5 position, with the former being 3rd and the later right behind at 4th place.
.
This week brings no difference with several films premiering and sneaking. Let's take a look:
.
Opening This Week:

Alone (PG - Some Disturbing Scenes)
.
A Thai horror flick telling why Siamese Twins shouldn't be surgically separated. It can actually be a frightening affair! Here, the female lead Pim finds out that she used to be a Siamese Twin. Later on, she starts to feel the presence of her late Twin sister!
.
Hype Scale: ***

Captivity (M18 - Violence)
.
A fashion model and a chauffeur are kidnapped and held hostage in a small room by a serial killer. Reminiscence of Saw? With Elisha Cuthbert leading this, those who're drawn to a gorgeous Cuthbert being tortured by a madman should probably catch this!
.
Hype Scale: ***

Gone Shopping (NC16 - Some Course Language)
.

Showcase of 3 different stories of urban characters in Singapore seeking refuge and/or therapy in shopping centres. What can go wrong with a movie doing a film with an agenda revolving around Singapore's favourite hobby?
.
Hype Scale: *** 1/2

Knocked Up (M18 - Course Language & Some Sexual Content)
.
Comedy on how an unexpected gift of life bestowed upon a couple after a one night affair affects their life. I'm speculating this to be a 'dark-horse' film, especially with Judd Apatow (who also did 40 year old Virgin) helming the direction of this movie.
.

Hype Scale: ***3/4

La Vie En Rose (NC16 - Brief Nudity & Some Drug Reference)
.
From what I see, it's about how a woman struggles to fight against poverty by singing. It's a French movie, and it might be refreshing as an arthouse flick out of all the commercial mainstream movies.
.
Hype Scale: ** 3/4

The Simpsons (PG - Some Course Humour)
.
D'OH! The Simpsons are back! This time in a movie-length feature episode that's bound to create laughter roars in theatres. Fans of the series, be sure to book tickets for this!

Sneaking This Weekend:

Disturbia (PG - Some Frightening Scenes)
.
A teenager who's under house arrest soon realises what kind of neighbours he's having when he spies on them. Ranging from a swimwear-clad hot babe who eventually joins him in the stakeout, to one whom he suspects is a serial killer on the loose! Sounds cool to me!
.
Hype Scale: ****

Cashback (M18 - Nudity)
.
A London art student who develops insomnia meets interesting characters when he begins late-night shift work at a supermarket. He's attracted to them for allowing him to vision new meanings in life, especially a quiet girl by the name Sharon. Another potential arthouse flick.
.
Hype Scale: *** 1/2

Flash Point (NC16 - Some Violence)
.
Starring Donnie Yen and Louis Koo, this mixed martial arts action thriller was once commented by critics as the 'best action film ever' during its participation in the Cannes Film Festival. Enough said.

Make a pick, enjoy some movies over this weekend.

I shall be posting again.
