Trip Down The Traditional Lane of Culture III

MuHu~!

Just for the record, I didn't foresee this coming seriously. How did I ever come to pen the third installment of the 'Trip Down The Traditional Lane of Culture' mini-agenda series? Is it a sign of my sense of nostalgia getting the better of me? Well, it isn't such a bad thing after all! Besides, who will disagree with a sight-seeing field trip coupling with great hawker delights at affordable heartland prices?

So where are we going today?

Allow me to throw some hints: It's situated along the North-east Line and the station that you have to alight goes by the code NE9. Can you guess it?

You're right! Today I shall be sharing my field trip visit to the Boon Keng Market! Situated right next to Boon Keng Station, it is very convenient for anyone to travel there. Even when it pours! It has been given a new look and improved shelter after the upgrading project completed recently!

Notice that these rows of shop-houses used to be operating without the new shelter that you're seeing in the photos shown above. It is now so much better for the residents and the shopkeepers, now that the crowd and business will not be deterred by wet weather! Now, let us move on to the adjacent hawker centre!

This is how the food centre looks like on a weekday afternoon...

Red bean gee-zhang with a strip of chee cheong fan ($1.70)

The red bean gee-zhang and chee cheong fan was really worth the price I paid for : $1.70. However nothing fantastic about it sets it apart from the offerings of other better stalls out there, but the red bean gee-zhang is really nice! Too bad I've forgotten the stall's name, I apologise for that! It's near Chong Pin Chicken Rice stall, that's the best I can provide for direction! MuHu~!

Chong Pin Chicken Rice - Char Siew & White Chicken ($2.50) (Nice~!)

Here's a look at the soup that comes with the chicken rice. There's actually a chicken neck in it!

Coming to the chicken rice at Chong Pin's, the rice itself is the attraction! Upon placing a spoonful of the chicken rice into your mouth, the fragrance perceived is unbelievable! An ordinary order of chicken rice will cost you $2.00, while having the chicken and rice separated on two plates will be an additional $0.80 since there's more chicken served in this option. Mixing two meats on a plate will cost $2.50, which is my case here where I ordered char-siew with white chicken. The char-siew is flavourful and covered by a strong tasty sauce, however I would suggest one to either stick to char-siew rice or chicken rice since it will allow one to better savour the fragrant rice. According to the regular patrons of the hawker centre there's always a long queue at Chong Pin's during the peak periods. Comes highly recommended by me!

Hwa Heng Fried Hokkein Mee ($2.50 Small Plate Option)

Hwa Heng specialises in fried hokkein mee and Penang fried kuay tiao. I've decided to go with the former since I'm not really a fan of the oily and artery-clogging later option. For $2.50, you're actually getting a decent deal here. Besides 2 fresh prawns, there's enough 'sotong' and pork served in the plate to fully utilise your $2.50!

Hai Xing Coffee Cafe - Kopi ($0.70)

Hai Xing Coffee Cafe was closing when I approached the uncle for my order. Perhaps it's due to this reason, the coffee turned out to be slightly less satisfying as I expected it to be better. This stall came recommended by my Dad, thus I guess I really looked forward to a 'kopi' experience just as fabulous as Da Zhong Cafe's at Hougang. Don't be mistaken that Hai Xing's kopi is mediocre or of sub-standards, it's actually aromatic and smooth upon sips! My expectation for this stall's just too high.

I shall be posting again.

Chenkuieh~!
