Film: Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa (Review)

I positioned my laughter gear to "ROFL" and wriggled like an adolescent boy within my seat to settle down as the Dreamworks sequence began animating on the silver screen. Just as the sequence was about to end, one of the penguins stuck a fin out from behind and struck the neck of the Dreamworks Fishing Boy in its trademark karate style. It was then when my engine began roaring with laughter.

Dreamworks Animation is sending the cute animals on yet another adventure in Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa. Like its self-explanatory title, they find themselves in Africa this time round as their attempt to fly from Madagascar back to New York... well... fails.

This sequel to the 2005 original seems to be somewhat...different. While it's not as entertaining as the first, there appears to be better in-depth character coverage. More is revealed of Alex's (The Lion) past as well as certain hidden agenda among the animals. Almost every character attains an increase in feature time, less Mort whose screen time is reduced to just the beginning and the end. Dreamworks is a master at inducing joy and laughter amidst superb dynamic plot delivery in their computer animated projects of late, as evidently noticed in Shrek and Kungfu Panda. In Madagascar 2, they've decided to exert a little more focus on story-telling. They tend to strike hilarity right at the start of their films, however it wasn't so for Madagascar 2. If it wasn't for King Julien and the Penguins, the joy factor might be dramatically reduced. Perhaps it's no wonder why this movie felt a tad bit serious as compared to the first, but this in no way exudes superiority or inferiority over the original as I see them both as two different films.

The animals are as cute as ever, my favourite remains to be King Julien XIII (played by Sacha "Borat" Baron Cohen). Great mix of joy and animal fun, this is something for everyone from toddlers to gramps and grannys. There is an extra bonus if you choose to catch it in digital format like I did, motion images are amazingly stunning. Trust me, it's worthed it.

Great for families and dates.

Kacang Puteh, anyone?
