This superhero flick might well be one of the least popular ones when compared to Marvel's financial-vacuuming box-office megastars like Ironman and Batman, but it's definitely in line relentlessly with a worthy name helming the direction. Guillermo del Toro returns, after entertaining us with an unique dosage of dark humour in Hellboy, with a more condensed sequel - Hellboy II: The Golden Army.
This name should be prominent if you're a movie fanatic, as there're quite a few Oscar and BAFTA victories and nominations attached to this name alone. You might remember watching Pan's Labyrinth and Blade II, yeap he's the man who's responsible for those films.
Hellboy's signature blend of dark humour is very much present as expected, along with a more intense presence of several mythical creatures in forms of Elves, Trolls and what-nots. The creatures are a sight to behold as audience might like to take time and appreciate in wonder the creation of del Toro. They are not creatures you've typically seen in other monster or fantasy movies, so it allows one to feel as though they've entered del Toro's world of myth and darkness. One of the creatures that caught my attention was the Tooth Fairy, literally a petite frail looking creature that feeds on the teeth of its prey before going on to devour every inch of the carcass.
There's nothing much to the plot, since it's the usual "Hellboy saves the people from evil doers who attempts to wrestle power in their favour to rule the world" storyline. You get the draft, yea? So do head on to the theatres for this one if you have caught Red Cliff already, which is also incidentally the other bigger blockbuster screening this weekend as well.
Oh and do watch out for some really interesting guy pal moments between Hellboy and his sidekick Abe (Homo) Sapien, and also why we realized how crude the word "focus" can sound with German accent.
