The Closer

MuHu~!

What's the most possible icon to become when one suddenly finds himself or herself excessive time to waste and idle? That's right! It's exactly what you've thought, a couch potato. I think I'm gradually turning into one, except that I'm still following my fitness regime! I'm seriously reluctant to transform into a 'potato'! MuHu~! There's certainly a lot of time to spare especially when I've just completed my service with my Nation, thus as I was at breakfast this morning at the nearby Punggol Plaza, I found myself picking a few titles off the DVD rental shelves. There're five titles in total, and one of them's an American drama serial "The Closer".

The Closer broadcasted its pilot episode of the first season in June 2005, and I've only noticed it this morning at the rental store. I took only the first disc of the first season, worrying the possibility that it's dumpster-worthy. Boy, was I blown off by this show as I seriously undermined it. The female lead played by Kyra Sedgwick, roled as an investigator cum interrogator from Atalanta newly posted as Chief of Priority Murder Squad that deals with murder cases involving celebrities or key influential personnel of the society. She soon finds herself egoistically challenged by those in the squad who refused to accept the fact that a stranger had come waltzing in as their new boss. Boy, were they in for an amazing discovery of her true capabilities that otherwise had made her well known as "The Closer". Well, by looking at her nickname literally, she basically closes, well, cases. Duh~!

Kyra Sedgwick is fantastic in her role as Brenda Johnson, her Golden Globe nomination as Best Female Lead in a Drama Serial in 2006 and a subsequent deserved winner in the 2007 Awards have proved the point. Her confidence and faithfulness to her style of work and beliefs clearly displays her as the character who wittingly wrestles for sole influential control in the squad. For that, you'll either love or hate Brenda Johnson. Her chemistry with the rest of the squad members improved gradually from being aloof to contiguous. There's a lot more character chemistry scripted as compared to CSI, not to mention the fabulous screenplay scripting. The dialogues, which I actually valued the most, are well-penned and full of complexity, dark humour, sarcasm, puns and lots of interesting fun. Otherwise, it's a one-episode-one-case series that is similar to CSI.

So far, I've only completed the first disc that includes three episodes. I've checked it out at their official website at TNT, there's only twelve episodes for the first season. Supposing if there are only three episodes for each of the discs, that will leave me with three more discs to go. Even though I've only reviewed this series based on the first three episodes, it has proved itself to be a winner and ignites my craving for the rest of the series.

The Closer comes well recommended from me for those of you criminal series geeks out there. CSI is not the only good series around in its genre, it's only the flagship pioneer that has set good standards for others to follow. You should give The Closer a well worthy chance to redeem itself and overthrow your hard-rock status of CSI in your heart. For all criminal series fans out there, add this to your DVD collection.

I shall post more in time to come, and thank you for your support so far! It's really appreciated~!
